I was wondering as we are thinking of moving. If you were to start over and build an apiary where would you move and why?
I'd either start over in GA, NC, or SC. No winters like here in New England and something always seems to be blooming in season there.

Where you have farmers growing some things they like in the south.
The best honey harvests are in North Dakota...
Orange blossom honey. YUM! :)
Why are the Dakota's so good? I am not sure If I would like the winters!

I believe he said "Dakota's harvest", does that mean extracting the honey ?
Many large polinaters I understand call the Dakota's Home, they ship their bees all around the country, then bring them home for the winter & honey extraction. ?? Then the Dakota's get credit for the honey ??
This is just my guess ! I have been wrong before !!
Bee-Bop
Thats the question I need to find out, If you look at the top 5:
State
Pounds Produced
Dollar Value of Production
North Dakota
35,100,000
$47,385,000
South Dakota
21,375,000
$28,643,000
California
18,360,000
$25,888,000
Florida
11,850,000
$15,405,000
Minnesota
9,516,000
$13,227,000
I understand California and Florida I just dont understand the Dakota's and Minnesota?
Farm crops? Maybe google their largest agricultural crop and see if that matches up.
Alright!!! we came in a respectable 4th!! WOOO HOOO!!
Actually, Florida does have something in bloom most of the year which is great for hobbyists, but please remember that those figures reflect mainly commercial beeks and most FL commercial outfits are migratory.
The honey harvests are (of course ) due to the large citrus industry here, but many of those hives have also seen blueberries in Maine, almonds in CA, and a myriad of other crops in between. How does one truly quantify nectar?

I wondered about it too, until someone pointed out that the
northern states have *really* long days during the summer,
so the bees are out longer.
