I'm going to ask Michael Bush to expand on the subject of the Joseph M. Brooks method here on the forum.

This is the Brooks method in the words of Isaac Hopkins:

It was Hopkin's actual method, but the one NAMED the Hopkins method is this one:

The Brooks method is a variation on the Alley method:

and virtually identical to the Better Queens method by Smith:
