Title: Which frames should I keep?
Post by: Hemlock on November 30, 2009, 07:10:14 PM
No frost = Wax moth.
I was in the one hive, double deep, a month ago and saw NO sign of the moth.  I went in Sunday, 60+ degrees, to remove hive-top feeders & crystallized sugar.  Found 4 frames beat up by wax moth; all pollen frames.  Pulled them plus an additional 6.  Reduced colony to single deep & stuffed it with best 10 frames:

5 - capped honey
2 - pollen
3 - brood area* & some capped honey (* - only a handful of capped & uncapped brood which seems right)

Does this mix sound OK?  many beeks here overwinter with a deep & a medium per colony.

Thanks

I would think in VA you'll probably be ok.
