Title: Measuring Bees ?
Post by: larry tate on December 29, 2009, 06:54:14 PM
I was wondering if someone might share on how to measure bees in pounds per volume. For example 2 pounds of bees are a box, etc. 5" x 6" x 10". I have no scale as of yet. Thanks!

How would you use that information once you are able to achieve it?  I would imagine that the volume to weight ratio would vary greatly  based on size of bees and how tightly you want to pack them in.

Took some measurements on my 3lb. shipping boxes. These are inside dimensions 15" X 5-1/8" X 7-3/4"
This is also equipped to hold the syrup can. Hope this helps with idea of space. Remember to give enough space to keep them from overheating.

I was told when I bought my 3lb packages that there were approximately 20,000 bees in it.  I have no idea if that is correct or not.

I have always heard 1 lb is somewhere between 3,000 & 3,300 bees.

That sounds right.  3 pounds = about 10,000 bees.

1 kg is 10 000 bees.

2 - 2,5 kg swarm occupye one Langstroth box.

So 200 g bees per frame.

Our bee breeder calcukated just the weight of 1000 bees and got 106 g

I must have misunderstood.  I got two 3lb packages so 10k per package would be 20K.

   1 pound / lb = 0, 453 kg

    3 lb = about 1,5 kg = 15 000 bees.
