Is there such a thing as a GOOD pollen substitute or one that is OK to use if you dont have real pollen to feed? I have read a little on the subject of feeding patties, and most recipes call for some real pollen. I'm wondering what options I have without real pollen available and if there are things I should know before using them.
Thanks
you might want to do some research on what pollens are available in your area and when. for instance, i have trees that are heavy pollen producers, early. for me to feed a substitute in February, when most start feeding them, would be a waste. you may find that you don't need one at all.
when i do use them, i use the higher protein patties that mann lake sells. not the most expensive, but not the cheapest. tossed the box or i would tell you which they were. the bees seem to like them. whether or not they really do much good is another question :-)
i will toss them on late winter or early spring if we are going to have extended bad weather.
Thanks for the info. Hopefully come spring I still have bees alive.
Do you feed pollen to nucs when you make them to help them build up? I hope to make splits as soon as I can if I have healthy colonies left come spring.
Anybody try putting the pollen powder in the hive without making it into a pattie? I understand that this works well since the pattie attracts small hive beetle.
