Title: Changing cell size
Post by: Joelel on January 25, 2010, 06:27:09 PM
I have all small size cell frames plastic in my hives. How do i go about changing them out to get the bees to make their own foundations and cells ? Can I just cut the centers out and leave about an 1/2 inch around the edge or do i have to cut all out. If i leave an 1/2 inch will they pick up building their own size ? I also have some more new ones, can i cut the centers out of them ? Or should i just fase them out and over to the honey and give them new for brood. Do ya have to use a blank starter strip in wooden frames or can you use regular foundations and cut strips  ? Will they keep drawing out the same size cells or go to their size ?

If you have all small cell foundations, can the bees make drone cells on the same foundations or do you have to put some drone foundations in ? I know drone cells are a lot bigger.

you can cut out all but a small strip across the top.  they will build onto that what they want.  someone who uses small cell will have to let you know about drone cells, but seems to make sense that they would not make good drone cells on small cell foundation............
