Title: Best location for hives?
Post by: Greg watkevich on January 25, 2010, 09:50:10 PM
When setting hive locations, what sites are preferred in the NorthEast?  edge of woods? south facing field? early moring sun? or late morning sun? and why?
Thanks, Greg watkevich

I was told to have the entrance facing southeast so it catches the first of the sun. Here the wind never seems to blow from the south.

My choice is either face the southeast or southwest. I also understand that bees will travel a couple miles in search of pollen, but what is a good nominal distance for efficiency, given my bees will need to travel some distance from my property.

* The closer the better to known/good pollen sources.
* I'd choose SE
* You'll want to consider a spot that's protected from prevailing winds
* You'll want to ensure it's not in a low, cool-air collecting spot
* You'll want to make sure hives aren't facing/near a spot where people/animals frequent

Something everyone forgets is proximity to apple orchards and farmers feilds. I've had poionings from Furadan sprayed on sweet corn. I try to keep my apiaries as far away from pesticide users as possible.

Hi Jim, It looks like we are from the same area(Athol).  Leave me an email address and I'll get in touch.  I'm new at this and need some good local information on the "to do's" and "not to do" of beekeeping to get up and going. I have my bees on order and have built some hives.
Cheers, greg watkevich
