What do you do if you don't have a friend 2-3 miles away to take your splits to?

Big branch directly in front of hive will help with reorientation. Switch hive position if numbers seem lopsided.

Place your split 10 feet away, put branch in front of exit to force re-orientation. Later deal with drift by switching places with another hive.

Shake in a few extra bees, or face both hives to the old location.  www.bushfarms.com/beessplits.htm (http://www.bushfarms.com/beessplits.htm)

Michael -

Thanks for the interesting and informative link to "how to do splits".  Can you please clarify one thing about a walk away split.  Can these be moved to a different part of my property after the split is completed or do the nucs need to be positioned like you describe for the even split?
