Title: How to get crystalized Honey out of comb?
Post by: Grandma_DOG on March 08, 2010, 01:52:03 AM
This weekend I was visiting a friend 8 hours drive from home. He happened to know of a feral hive and I happened to have my bee gear and a spare bait hive in my truck.

I cut out this booming hive from under a water tank and even in early march is has great honey resources. But the honey was wonderful Cotton honey, and some of it is crystalized. This is the second best honey I've ever come across. I don't want to give it back to the bees, it is too good for that. What's my best move?

My only option I can think of is melting comb and honey in a double boiler,  let it cool, then the honey and wax are easy to separate.

Anybody got a better idea?

Heating tends to lose a lot of flavor and darken the honey.  If you are gentle enough, you might do it without damaging it too much.

It takes a taste of melted wax.

Let the small nuc lick & clean combs and store into nother combs.

Crush and strain in a warm area (100 - 115F)?  You might lose some of the crystallized stuff, but get most of the rest....  Then you can always heat the remainder and melt the wax to seperate.

put it in a plastic bag and place it under your wind shield of your car with the windows up-then it should be liquid -cotton honey crystalizes very fast-RDY-B
