Title: Uncle Bud & Alan Bukley Come To Southeast, Louisiana-March 24, 2010
Post by: JP on March 24, 2010, 11:35:34 PM
Sunday night Alan & Big Daddy showed up at my pad. I cooked shrimp etouffee & had boudin as well. They ate less than a hummingbird! I cooked all day and they stopped at McDonald's and had hamburgers!

Monday we met up with Bailey in Raceland and went through his hives, looking real good & a flow is on down there (jealous!) Made several splits and caught one hive just before it swarmed.

Alan found the very thinned down mated queen and we found two other virgins, one hatched out right in front of us.

We had a real ball, just messin' with the bees.

Monday night they sopped real good on the etouffee. a long day in the bee yard will make ya hungry!

Yesterday Alan and Bud went through my main yard. I could only stay til noon as I had a cut out (pictured). Thing had somewhere between 25-30,000 bees, it was supposed to be an easy one!

Caught a nice sized swarm today, virgin left the box three times, third time I caught her on a tree low to the ground surrounded by about twenty five bees or so. Picked 'em up tonight.

I'm now at 39 hives and growing.

I sure had fun with uncle Bud, Alan and Bailey. We got a lot done and passed a good time.

JP

I just loved that photo of your hand touching the swarm. That is my favorite.  Also the hive frame with all that brood. What a nice brood pattern on that hive.

Don't know what shrimp etouffee is?? Glad you had such a good time with your beekeeping friends.

Annette

Wow, Emeril, I should have known you would make something of his.  I used to be addicted to his show.  I bet the boys truly loved that dish, even though I am vegetarian, I know a good dish when I see one.

Annette!! You don't know etouffee!!  You must find some and try, preferably from a native Louisiana-er.  OMG.  Believe me, your experience with etouffee will be MUCH better than vegemite.

Eeeetoouuuuffeeee . . . mmmmm, now I'm all hongry.  Don't know what I was more jealous to read, about the bee swarms or home-made etouffee. .

/drooling.

love,
ziffa

Annette, you add the shrimp last after everything else is done. You could still enjoy it without the shrimp but the shrimp adds a good bit of flavor to the dish.

Go ahead and make it with the shrimp and enjoy it. Just don't tell anyone.  :-D

Annette are you a strict vegetarian or a vegan?
I haven't eaten meat in 16 years, just because I don't like it, but I love me some shellfish. I also love ice cream too much to give up dairy. Broiled scallops and a huge ice cream sundae afterwards  mmm mmmm.

Strict vegetarian, not vegan.  I eat dairy products.

That recipe JP posted has me thinking how I can make it in a vegetarian version. I have to print it out and decide what to do.

Actually it was indeed a royal pain in the asprin. If the window was a foot or two taller it would have been much, much easier. Really should have done it laying down on my stomach.
