Title: Installing packages into old hives
Post by: alfred on April 09, 2010, 09:43:07 PM
I am going to receive some packages in a couple of weeks. I am planning on starting them off using some comb and honey left over from some hives that died over the winter.

What I am thinking of doing is installing them into two mediums for each package, with a couple of frames of honey each and the rest all drawn empty frames. I am thinking that if i do this it will give them a good head start. I am also guessing that I will not need to feed them sugar syrup as the comb will already be drawn out and I will be providing them with honey. I have not done this this way before. In the past I have always given them empty frame to draw and sugar syrup to feed and stimulate comb building.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alfred

Sounds fine to put them in there and I would add the feed just to help them out.   If there is a honey flow, they will not hit the feed, but it might help them to get a good start.  Sugar don't cost as much as new replacement bees.
