Title: moving hives when spliting
Post by: Ollie on April 14, 2010, 12:48:54 AM
Having split a few hives , I have never really moved them farther than a couple of feet from where they where split...and aside from just a good healthy branch over the entrance, no other precautions.reduce entrance by half too.
Ok so the foragers go back to the old hive...big deal..there are new ones being made daily.if there is honey and pollen the split lives on just fine. within three days it seems like there are a bunch of bees flying in and out of the split, lose the branch..done deal.
Does anyone else do their splits on the same site?

What would the advantage of moving be?

I move the queenrite hive a matter of 5 or 10 feet. That way, at least some, if not all, foragers will go with the queenless half.

If your making your splits with just nurse bees then your ok, but i'd rather not lose those valuable foragers. It may not seem like it makes a difference but your breaking a cycle that will have to make up for itself. I move mine miles , keep them strong and if everything goes right i'll split the splits before the summers over.

I set them next to each other and just rerverse the hives.
