Title: AGGRESSIVE BEES
Post by: schawee on April 15, 2010, 09:35:26 PM
I HAVE 2 HIVES IN MY BACKYARD THAT I BEEN HAVING FOR THREE YEARS.BOTH ARE GOOD HONEY PRODUCERS AND VERY GENTLE TO WORK.ALOT OF TIMES I HAVE A VAIL AND SHORT PANTS WHEN WORKING THE BEES.TODAY WAS DIFFERENT,I WENT TO PUT ANOTHER SUPER ON AND THEY ATACKED ME.ALL I DID WAS PULL A FRAME OUT TO CHECK IT AND WHEN I PUT IT BACK IN THEY LIT ME UP. I DID SMOKED THEM  LIKE I DO EVERY TIME I OPEN THE HIVE.WAS STUNG 10-15 TIMES ON MY ARMS AND HANDS.THE WIND WAS BLOWING LIKE 8-10 MPH.NOT SURE IF THAT SET THEM OFF.    ....SCHAWEE

Did you get popped from one hive or both of them?   Do you have AHB in you area?  Maybe you just crushed a few bees with the frame pulling it out or putting it back in and made them defensive.

Not that it sounds like you stuck around to see if it was the same queen, they may have replaced the queen and now you have vicious bees.

Suit up good and check them again.   Make sure they are queen right.  You may have to get another one or replace the one you got now.  Don't put up with mean bees.

Suit up.  Use some smoke.  Take your time.  If they are still mean, requeen.

Sometimes they get mean if they are close to queen cells emerging. Maybe they are replacing the queen or she failing and they have queen cells?
