Title: Spring Feeding? What ratio?
Post by: Midwest WI on April 21, 2010, 01:57:48 AM
For spring feeding, what ratio of sugar to water are you using?  I was told 2 parts sugar to one part water by weight?  What is the best way to get that much sugar to dissolve?  Any help is appreciated.

Typical recommandation is 1:1.  I use more like 2:1 as you describe.  It keeps longer and I have to haul half as much to the hives... weight or volume is no difference.  I use volume for water and weight for sugar.  A pint of sugar is a pound.  A pint of water is a pound.

To get 2:1 to dissolve, boil the water, add the sugar and stir until clear (or certainly if it starts to boil) remove from heat.

I use this little calculator to figure out how much of what to put in the syrup.

Conversions (http://www.beekeeping.com/goodies/conversions_bee.htm)

To dissolve the sugar first boil the water.  Take it off of the heat then add the sugar and stir.
