Title: Just an observation or two from a beginning beek
Post by: VolunteerK9 on April 22, 2010, 11:07:29 AM
This past Saturday (4/17), I installed my 3 new packages. In one of the hive bodies, I'm running mediums, I placed 4 frames of honey with the remaining 6 being foundation.  On the other hive, another 4 frames of honey , (2) frames of foundation and the remainder of frames with nothing but wood starter strips.  The bees are making their own comb faster than the others that are building on foundation, just as M. Bush said they would, and its all nice and straight so far. The other remaining package went into a deep of fully drawn and seems to be doing fine. I know that this has been hashed and rehashed to death but just wanted to relay my personal experience and I'm really impressed.

The second observation was that as I was watching them do there thing yesterday afternoon, that a normal working bee flyby sounds a world different than a highly ticked off one on her final approach to the back of your neck. Yowza! That one smarted.

You want to remember that sound.  It lets you differentiate between a hive of confused bees and a hive of angry bees...

Today while working in the fields about a couple hundred feet from the hive, there was this one bee that was a real pest.  Would not leave the wife and I alone.  She was just nosey.  Never doing anything but being annoying.  I just ingnored her.

Her sound was different.  I could hear her 20 feet away.
