Title: Made my first split!
Post by: gardeningfireman on April 29, 2010, 12:37:42 PM
In a previous post, I told about brood in the honey supers. Well, yesterday I looked into the upper deep of one of the hives and found a bunch of swarm cells. Two were in the process of being capped. I took the med. frames with brood from both hives, some food frames, and some deeps with the swarm cells and more brood, along with all the "attached" bees and some empty frames and put them into a new hive (one deep and one medium) I made sure not to include the queen! Tomorrow I will move them to their new home! :-D Hopefully I prevented that hive from swarming, but I have two swarm traps out just in case.

Sounds like you had some fortunate timing.  I'll be making my first splits this season.  Please keep us up to date on your split.

I did the same thing once, but my homemade nuc had a solid bottom. I ended up squishing 5-6 nice looking queen cells. :(
