Ok well this week I picked up a huge swarm 7-8 lbs. I am on a 4K Sq ft lot and now have 3 hives, it is just to much. I have a second yard about 3 block away which is 10 acres and we are starting to put hive there. My father in law wants a hive so I was thinking that I can put it there which is about 10 miles away and give it 3 weeks and split the hive and relocate it back to our other yard.
Does this sound right or will they start flying back home?
.
8 lbs swarm is optimal size. It occupies 2 Langstroth boxes and is able to forage a good yields like normal hive. It is able to bring 40-60 kg honey in next 4 weeks if it has a good pasture and nectar flow.
10 miles is quite far to nurse a swarm.
Keep it in near location. Give to the swarm 10 litre 30% syrup and they will draw quickly the foundations.
