Have you guys seen these chicks? Dyed in the egg.

Great for Easter.

Yeah, our local feed store had some colored chicks at easter time. I think it's a silly idea, but I guess they think "what ever sells". I don't know what breed of chicken they usually use for it though. I would guess just a white rock because the feathers are just a light yellow normally as a chick. I'd think chicks that are normally brown or black wouldn't show the color as well.

That is hard on the ckick and usally kills them a little latter in life.

Sorry to disagree with you and the newspaper article on the link, but all you have to do is dye the eggs early enough and the chicks come out whatever color you dye them. If you "inject" into the egg or crack it in any way, it will kill the embro and the chick will never develop or hatch.

Also, in about 3 weeks, the colored feathers drop out like they naturally would and the chick turns yellow or whatever color they normally would be. It has no lasting effect on them. They simply lose their baby feathers like we lose hair.

My main objection is that they are sold to children who often mistreat them or soon tire of them and they die or are killed or are abondonded. We used to get ones that didn't sell and put them in with our own chickens.

But they are still cute!

I hadn't noticed that. But looking again, I see their poor little beaks are colored too. That's sad. And they look weird.

When we were in China, we had chicken with black skin and the meat was still white.

It was more freaky that it came with the head attached.

Amazingly, it tasted like chicken!

it is sad, and if I wouldn't do it to my kids
