Title: Hanging swarm traps with rope? Question
Post by: harvey on May 15, 2010, 11:35:14 PM
Hello all,  tomorrow I want to set out some swarm traps.  I was going to mount them to the top of a ten foot two by four.  Someone mentioned to just throw a rope over a limb and let them swing?   Would this work if the traps were just swinging in the breeze?  any opinions?   or should I set them solid on a two by four?  I did find some lemon grass oil for bait.

I never tried letting them swing, so I really can't say, but I was always afraid the bees would not think it was stable enough for a home...

Well I put out three traps today,  one in the middle of the woods next to a creek.  One about ten feet in the woods off of a field, edge of woods is covered in berry briars.  The third I put on the edge of a grass field.  All of them are between ten and fifteen feet up.  I did hang them with rope.  I used a rachet strap around the hive and put a d ring on the top and bottom.  I used on rope to hold them up and another to try and keep them stable from the bottom.  I don't know of any hives in the areas I put the traps but I know there are bee's in the area.  I put a swarm lure in each bait hive and then put three or four drops of lemon grass oil on the face of the hive?   Got my fingers crossed.

"Build it and they will come!"   Good luck on the swarm catching. If there is bees in the area the scouts should find the boxes with the swarm lure.
