Title: Bees turning right?
Post by: slacker361 on May 20, 2010, 09:37:57 AM
I have watched my bee hive, and it is atop a 100 foot hill with a valley on one side and a field on the other, it seems that the bees come out of the hive and turn right to head over the valley, do all bee turn right when exiting the hive? I read about the bee escape board working because of the bee turning right, but i didnt know if that was with flying also

I have many that leave and go to the left, right and straight ahead. It depends on what they are after, its location.

Mine all turn left.  Y'know how their society is organized and all  they work tirelessly for nothing till they die, then I come in and take all that they've worked for! :-D

Seriously, though, I've paid particular attention to what they do with an orientation flight, but the foragers head up and then to whatever direction they plan to go.

there must be something to the right that they are liking then. This is good news as my garden is to the LEFT, and I thought " crap now I gotta move the hive"

I have some that exit the hive, fly straight up in a circle and then off they go in various directions.  They are fun to watch for sure.

Bees on the right make and store more honey.   Bees on the left are worthless whiners, waiting to get their share of the honey collected by bees on the right.

.
If they turn left, turn the hive  and they will turn to right

Ours just soar up in a spiral curve, like so many angels climbing a spiral stairway, and head off whicheverway they are working when they reach treetop level. It is lovely to watch, especially in the late afternoon sunbeams.

It is exhilarating to watch them drop back down to the hives too, the way they just plunge down and then hover til they have space to walk or fly in.

Mine scatter in all directions, like dry leaves in the wind.  That's because there are flowering trees in all directions.

Hey! This hard-working, tail-busting leftie begs to differ! :D

My bees go every which way.
