Title: newbee help again
Post by: rgy on May 25, 2010, 11:03:41 AM
new hives late last month.  i figure queen was out on the 29th and I checked on the 15th and i had larvae, didn't mess around a look for eggs or the queen.  They had maybe 2 to 2.5 frames pulled.  I was planning on going in today and see if I need to add another super.  Think I am over optimistic and I should just let them bee until this weekend????

Either or, they could have pulled out everything, have you been feeding them. that would help them grow and pull. You could be being optomistic  but hey, won't hurt to have a nice look.

Wouldn't hurt if you gave your location. Helps with advice.

Think I would wait til 7-8 frames are drawn and covered with bees.

when you are starting out i think it is better to look more often.  not only will you learn, but you'll be able to see changes and hopefully catch a problem early.

I was over optimistic!  they had 5 frames pulled, found eggs!, larvae, didn't see the queen.  they have pulled the 5 frames on one side of the hive, I thought they would work from the middle out towards both sides, PROBLEM????

they are very gentle just don't like people in front of the entrance.  One sting to a friend who came out to watch but stood in front and just when I was going to tell him to move to the side he got hit.  only used smoke at the very end to get them to go down so I could put the top feeder on without smashing a million of them.

I opened mine every three or four days for the first month I had them.  Then it drifts off to a more reasonable level . . . The bees will be just fine, and you'll learn.  If they start getting hot you may want to back off, but I bet they won't.

Welcome to the addicition!
