Title: Small swarm or left behind bees?
Post by: harvey on May 28, 2010, 12:24:45 PM
I caught a large swarm last week at my dad's.  I had hung a dadent deep about 15 foot in a tree swinging from a rope.  Seems to be a real nice swarm and is building comb in its new hive with gusto.  Today a week later I put a couple swarm traps back out.  I decided to hang another one in same spot as before.  As I was hoisting it up all of a sudden there were bee's all over it again?  I looked and on the side of the tree was a few hundred bees clustered,  maybe more but definately not a large swarm.  Now I moved the swarm trap at night when I didn't see any bees flying.  Would these be left over bees that I didn't get the first time or could it be another small swarm?  How would I tell?  It is small enough that if they do stay in the swarm trap i think I will try and combine them with another hive that is still in single box.  I will combine them with the first swarm I took from that tree.  Does that sound like a good idea?   I burried the other swarm trap back in the woods on the edge of a swamp.  Not much sun back there but will be interesting to see if any bees come around the bait hive.

my guess would bee bees left from when you moved the trap. although it could be a secondary swarm with a virgin queen take a look and see if there is a queen or signs of a queen.  if there is a queen you can add a frame or 2 of capped brood to help build it up to see if you can make it survive
