Sounds normal for them just starting, and giving them the larger entrance is a good idea too. As far as they seem to be able to guard the entrance, you can open it up wide.

i opened both hives today and i found both queens. they are both laying eggs. it was a beautiful site. my family and i went to a bee meeting around the road and visited a veteran bee keeper. he has 40 hives and already has got 4 swarms this year. its a blessing to have someone that close to our home that can help us. talk to yall later.

That is a blessing. When I started beekeeping, all I had was this forum. It's been a great help, but I sure did post alot of pictures and ask some very simple questions. I just didn't know what I was looking at in the hive. It would have helped if I had someone close by to look in my hive and tell me what the "new" stuff was. The books just didn't give me quite enough info, and there's only so much a person can do on-line to explain what going on.
