Hi, all, I'm getting ready to retire from the Navy late next year, and will maybe have time to keep some bees finally..so I am swarming the bee forums to see where to draw comb...(sorry, dumb jokes are stock in trade..)
I've been interested in keeping bees since I was young and just never had the chance..either no land or no time..so now I have land and I hope I'll have time.
I have an old lang hive out back, I bought to use as a pattern, but I'm not too thrilled with the architecture there..it seems to involve a lot of heavy lifting and not a ot of low impact maintenance, so, while I will likely end up with some lang hives at some point, it is more likely that I will wind up with either Kenyan or Tanzanian top bar hives...I am leaning more towards the Tanz as I can build it to accept frames from a Langstroth without having to cut up the frame and comb..again with the low impact.
I am a (mostly) organic gardener, and we have a huge 3/8 acre garden..(sold some squash and beans yesterday as a matter of fact..)
and am interested in the pollination factor, even though there seems to be a colony of italians doing just that for me, as well as a colony of bumbles..haven't found those little buggers yet..and of course, there is always the honey..
Welcome Aboard once again. I had to reply.....must be that film, "The first 48 hours".
Welcome to the forum, Thank you for your service. You will find lot of people here to help you with anything you need to know about honeybees.

"The first 72 hours?"
That film is a running joke come initiation time....
Hmm now lets see, being in Virginia you could be a black shoe or airdale? Wouldn't think a black shoe would be into beekeeping?
Brown shoes are for mucking out stalls...black shoes are fer sailin'!
AEGIS/BMD FCC....
Gotta friend who is a brown shoe puke...she can't help it, it's genetic...cute adorable little blonde girl who
can work any three men into the ground...<sigh>..where was she when I needed a wife?

Maybe I just remember it as 48 hours because on my first ship I slept in a canvas rack and the guy above me was a bed wetter! BMC....Don't get no black shoer that that!
LOLZ..I remember those...dimly...
's funny...the BMC is gone today and the wierdroom was sending the gunno ashore...ops was beating the crap out of the 1lt trying to get a (he called it a piper, at which point the mess erupted in laughter)
Boatwain...so 1st come and asks me, the aegis twidget to pipe this little airedale dropout off the boat...gotta love it.
I once piped an old Boatswains Mate into his crypt at the request of the family. No guns, no bugle, just another old Boatswains mate and his pipe.
Aww...that's cool! I did my transintiduction or whatever it is this week onboard Old Ironsides...the sailing master was a DC3, and he heard me kick another s.l.u.g. off my line (stbd maintop brails) for whining...he said "Atta boy Boats!"
Never had a better compliment...
