Title: Feeding - inverted jar
Post by: montauk170 on June 15, 2010, 03:31:45 PM
Newbee question and I have searched and read replies to other posts of the same topic but I have a specific question.
When inverting a jar with metal lid and I put it ontop of my inner cover that has a hole, how do the bees reach the lip to drink the syrup?
Can bees cling onto the metal lid or it's too smooth and will fall off? I read they cluster, do they build a bee ladder and take turns drinking?
Thanks

They are flying up side down walking up side down and all over each other to get at it.They don't look like they have a problem at all.

I've watched them feed through the jar lid. They do just fine and it's interesting to watch their tongues(?) poke through the holes when the syrup isn't coming fast enough!

When I lift a jar up that isn't empty, there's always 4 or 5 hanging on to the lid. That tells me they have no problem griping the lid and feeding.

Ditto, Iddee!  I have always fed with gallon glass jars and the bees have no problem hanging onto the lid.  A lot of the time they will glue the lid to the inner cover hole with propolis!
