Title: Package 2nd deep question
Post by: Pond Creek Farm on June 20, 2010, 11:27:16 PM
Second deep on package installed late March.  I have mostly PF100 , but the bees seems disinterested.  I put a single frame with a starter strip in, and it is fully drawn and full of honey.  In fact, it is drawn out too much so such that it extends beyond what it should and all the way to the adjoinging plastic foundation.  So, the flow is still on here. Should I pull all the plastic and put in frames with starter strips, pull the plastic and coat it in more wax or do something else?

In my climate, alternatively, I could pull the deep and put on a medium with either pf120 or starter strips.  I do need them to draw either a full medium or most of deep to overwinter.

i can't answer your question but i've observed the same thing.  i pulled the plastic a couple weeks ago and replace them with wood frames and foundation which were drawn out in two weeks.  as advised i've painted the plastic with bees wax.  when i added a second deep saturday i used three of the plastic frames and five wooden to see if they accept the plastic with extra wax.

You could try spraying the frames with sugar syrup or honey.
