does anyone think it is too late in the year to start a hive from a nuc ? will they be able to store enough honey for winter ?

It should be fine. You'll want to really watch how much chow they've got going into winter with decent brood/colony size.

I made a few splits in mid July last year and I live way up North...they all survived the past mild winter and started this season real strong, but I fed some syrup to make sure they were built up enough.  You should be fine if you make sure they go into winter with adequate reserves.

You should be fine. At the very least, you can always over winter a small colony in a nuc.
