How is everyone doing with honey production now with there honey bees in NY? Some of mine are fine but one of my splits is having a rough time. What should I expect right now for honey this year in NY. I use 2 deeps then mediums on top for honey. Anyone else up here getting honey?
hi there. i am just getting started with my first attempt at beekeeping. i just acquaired a nuc about 10 days ago. but i noticed that you are only about 20 minutes from my bees, which reside in greene. i, however, am from new jersey. what kind of bees do you have ?

Just went to binghamton yesturday and saw the bmets play and a person in greene on rt12 had 10 one deeps along his yard. Must be a growing interest! :)
My hives are storing honey fairly well now. My best flow is in the fall from the Goldenrod. I'll harvest as much as I dare just before that and normally I'll get a little of that too and let them keep most of it for winter.
I did a couple splits this year and the nucs don't seem to be progressing as well as I thought thet might. I planned to check for production today after work but was delayed and the weather wasn't the best.
I'm hoping to find that I need to add a super at least to one hive.
Bees are still working some Sumac and milkweed.
Do any of you have Rose of Sharon around you. We have two large specimen out back, both about 15' tall and probably 12' wide. I keep them heavily pruned on the are now totally covered with blooms, The trees are a constant flurry of activity, between the bees and hummingbirds. The bees turn almost white when they emerge from the blooms, they are totally covered. Is this a good source as far as honey goes?
None by me, so I don't know :(
Seems it must be good for something, there are more on that than the clover right now, and because of the recent rain, we have had a new rush of pink clover start to bloom, the bees seem to like the rose of sharon better. I think they might grow for you in your area, they grow fast and blossom profusely.
i don't think i have any rose of sharon. i do have about an acre of asters that the bees seem to like. the asters seem to have exploded this year. i've never seen so many of them before, at least not on my property.
Right now my honey bees are on white clover. :-D Thank goodness something is flowering again in NY!
just curious, is corn a self pollinating crop or will the honeybees get into the corn when they begin to flower ?
As far as I know corn is wind pollinated. I do believe the bees will gather some pollen but is not a nectar source.
Goldenrod started blooming today. Time to gear up :-D
