Title: swarm season.....
Post by: Buzzen on July 18, 2010, 07:58:05 PM
How was everyone's swarm season?  I only got one call and it was waaaaaaaaaaay up north. Too far to go, so i still have no bees.  I think I got the wife convinced to get a package for this spring. How are your hives doing?

I got four swarms in my two bait hives and one swarm off of a tree inside of a prison!   Went from one hive last year to seven this year after buying two packages,  Have my fingers crossed that next year I can do as well with swarms and may try a split or two!  I am going to build enough boxes to go to twenty next year!  Then figure out why?

Word is getting out around my neighborhood that I have bees so I got a couple of calls this year.  I hope the word keeps spreading!  I wanted to catch more, but didn't advertise because I ran out of equipment after my expansion (20+ hives now).

Unfortunately, after the very wet and cold spring we had here, I also got to catch a couple of my own swarms.  You know what?  That's not nearly as much fun!

Three swarms (two fairly small, may need to combine) and one small cutout.  My swarm trap has come up empty.

Caught 5 swarms in my own yard...one got away.  Too high to reach.

Found some time after my work to catch seven swarms this year + three of my own hives. Had to combine three of my swarms because they were not building comb and brood very fast. I gave most swarm calls and all cut outs to members of the club. I have to find time to build more boxes now (it will be winter in no time).
