Title: Swapping Brood Deeps & Stores in the Bottom Brood Deep
Post by: beek4018 on August 03, 2010, 03:46:38 PM
In looking at my hive today I was considering swapping upper & lower brood boxes in a 2-deep ten frame setup.  I figured this may give the queen more room to lay if she was feeling pinched for space.  I have one or two frames of mostly honey in the upper deep, but everything else has brood or larva in it and in a good pattern.

I found that the lower deep looks to be filled with a lot of stores, mainly pollen, and only about 30% brood

Is this okay, common, or a problem.

Hive seems strong.  Lots of bees, and one nearly full honey super ( 8.5 of 10 frames full and capped).  I added a second honey super today.

Thanks for your help.

The queen likes to lay on the bottom and they store honey above that, on top.  Don't swap them now.

If you want to give her space, remove all but 2 pollen frames and freeze them for future use. Replace with empty frames.
