how close to the high fence do my boxes need to be, to achieve a high flight pattern?

Can be pretty darn close.
My bees seem to fly out of the entrance and go almost nearly straight up. And there is nothing in their way. How close are you wanting it. Or do you just want them up and over peoples heads?
my plan is to set the boxes approx. 4' from a 7' fence, above the fence there are tree branches.
I think that is pleanty of room. My question is, how long will it take them to realize the sun is up and get to work?
I went to a guys house to look at some used equipment two years ago. He had three hives in his backyard in a very close neighborhood setting. His hives were on the back side of his garage, facing west, with a six foot privacy fence about four feet in front of them. The hives were absolutely booming and he said he'd been doing this for ten years.

I have a chain linke fence about a foot in front of my hives. I have never seen the bees fly through the fence. They always seem to go up and over or fly in from the side.
Once they go high enough to clear the fence they will stay that high. What do you want them to clear? If you want them high right off, then you need the fence right off. If you just want them high before they hit the neighbor's yard, then you need the fence before your neighbor's yard.

the fence is actually 8' high
just trying to keep them from buzzing too close to my neighbors.
I have my work cut out for me.
I have three dogs & am building a fence around my hives to keep the dogs out & am trying to predict the bees' flight route as to determine which way I will enter " the hive yard " & where I put the entrance gate.
in case anyone's wondering, the dogs are spoiled rotten, inside ones, but they do like to run the yard & I want to protect them from undue stings as best I can.
I'm a suburban beekeeper and have a 6 foot block wall around the place. They gain altitude pretty quickly, so I don't worry much about normal neighbor/bee interactions. I worry more about a swarm clustering somewhere and getting more attention than it should. My dog got zinged a few times when I have worked the bees, and he pretty much stays away now. He's no dummy after all... well he is... but I like him anyway.
