Title: Water left over from melting wax
Post by: ziffabeek on August 08, 2010, 11:45:21 AM
Hello everybody,

It's been a crazy busy summer for me so I haven't been able to keep up with the boards, but I was hoping for some quick help with a wax question.

We finally got around to melting down the cappings from when we harvested.  We squeezed out as much honey as we could then wrapped it up in foil where it's been sitting for about a month.  We finally unwrapped it, washed it off a bit and then put it in the oven on warm where is melted.  When it cooled, we were left with a great disk of wax and a lot of brown sweet water.  My question is, if we filter the water somewhat, would that be something to feed to the bees?  Like sugar water?  My hubby says yes, its just honey and water but I'm afraid it has too much yuck in it from the detritous of the harvest (bee bodies etc).

What do you guys think?

love ziffa

If it has been over heated and caramelized it can be bad for the bees...best not to chance it.

If it melted wax in it (brown sweet water) it has caramelized and it will kill bees if you feed to the bees .

Be carefull of how you compost it though. The bees will still try to get to it. I Didn't know it was bad I always just slung it out of my wax melter when I washed my wax and capture pan. learn some thing new every day.
