Guy just called. Dead tree in backyard has to come down this week. Bee colony 30 feet up. Has a brother-in-law cutting the tree down so not sure they are going to have a lot of heavy equipment to section tree and lower gently. What are the chances of saving this colony if they let it fall? Any other advice?
One huge mess when it hits the ground for sure. If this is your first cutout, take what you think you will need then take a lot more. A bee vac would be a huge asset, as they will probably be the only thing salvageable.
If there are any other large trees close (next to the bee tree) you could rope the section with the bees, throw the rope over a sturdy neighboring tree, and lower it down into a waiting truck.

You may just end up with an old fashioned bee gum in that truck.
Stopped and looked last night. Tree is completely dead and 30 feet up is a conservative estimate, probably closer to 50. Nothing close by to work with. Will have to see what I can work out.
If you are careful with it (and depending on how large/heavy the section of log you need to cut) you can lower it down using the same trunk.
