Title: foraging on tobacco
Post by: FRAMEshift on September 10, 2010, 11:36:10 AM
My bee yard is surrounded by tobacco fields.  Does anyone know if bees will take nectar or pollen from tobacco plants.  Should I be worried that they will be bringing nicotine (a strong insecticide) into the hive?

Long ago I saw our bees getting the nectar out from under the blossom, before we cut the "suckers."  I never saw them get any pollen.  I can't say the honey tasted any different or gave me any kind of "buzz."

Bees will make toxic honey from rhododendron, so if there is anything in the tobacco......Your honey may sell better.
