These bees were drawing comb in the open. Is this typical of some bee's?
Bees on the pooorch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WrlTD1HyYw#)
Yes, they can do that sometimes. There are lots of pictures on this site with open hives like that and JP has a video or two about taking them down.
This video just makes me sad, though. Have none of these people ever heard of beekeepers?
What link did you use to list thatvideo? I found the story from the news network but did not want to link all their advertisers. I would like to put this up on the national honey bee day site. I'm not a computor geek. Just a regular one..
Thanks
I am just so glad the city was able to kill all those killer bees. Those 2 men were probable allergic to bees and with really mean bees, I am sure they would have been able to survive the cold winter coming up. And if they had not cut that tree down, there may have been another hove move in next week. :-D
Bjorn, if you click the blue text below the vid it will take you to the site. It really is sad to have to kill them all especially when you have a lift truck on site to remove the limb latter. That would have been a nice piece of art to hang on the wall.
Thanks paperman. I added this to the NHBD site.
Now you are right on that being a nice piece of art. That would look cool. If you could get the dead brood and the wasp spray out of it. I am surprised the city killed the bees. What city are they in?
Albany Ga.
A my place of work we had a few scout bees around the property a couple of weeks ago then a few days later this swarm flew in to nest under the roof eaves of the office building. Tons of bees swarmed the parking lot and around the building for about 20 min. It was pretty neat to see.

We find open air colonies in warmer climes quite a bit...just check out my avatar.

apparently all you beekeepers out there have been doing it all wrong. if you encounter a swarm in a tree you're supposed to kill all the bees and cut down the tree.
Those dang trees do cause a lot of problems.
Scott
What did they hope to accomplish by cutting down the tree? Lol Bit extreme if you ask me...both for the bees and the tree. WOW!
Well, lets say I get paid 3 hundred for removing the bees, how much do I charge for cutting down the tree afterward?
Well at least now, they can go back to sitting on the porch :idunno: :idunno:
I loved the part where the one touched the comb and said "eww...sticky" with a wave of his limp wrist! (not that there's anything wrong with that :-D)

That video almost made me cray. So sad. I am a former newpaper reporter and I can't believe how ignorant reporters are when it comes to covering these kinds of stories. And the City ought to know better as well.
I would hope some beekeeper in Albany took the time to call in and set the TV station straight on the travesty that just took place and the disservice the coverage did when it comes to handling a feral hive. People who watched that report will think that is the way people are supposed to react if a bee bothers them while they are sitting on their porch. Hard to believe they were that bothered.
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I got a kick out of the reporter trying to keep a straight face afterward.
Paperman, I'm removing an external colony tomorrow and maybe Friday. As mentioned those could have been saved. The thing with external colonies is that just about any beekeeper can remove them. Nothing to open up.
...JP
This happened in Albany,GA this week. Same town as the tree bees. Maybe there is something to the bees there?
Elderly Man Killed By Swarm Of Bees
Posted: 11:02 pm EDT October 11, 2010
ALBANY, Ga. -- An elderly man in southwest Georgia is dead after being stung more than 100 times by honeybees while cleaning a yard.
Authorities say 73-year-old Curtis Davis died Monday morning in Dougherty County. Authorities say he was cleaning up burning brush with a tractor when he hit a beehive.
Family members called for help after being unable to reach Davis because of the large number of bees. Albany Fire Department battalion chief Marty Leverett says emergency workers put on protective gear and try to help Davis.
A beekeeper was brought in to help Davis and kill the bees.
Sounds like yellow jackets to me.

Uh, yeah, is a fact checking department just a journalism joke like jetwash and shoreline?
The "Brave" tree butcher is the only descriptive dishap that jumped right out at me. Outside of that, why doesn't "the city" (of Valdosta Ga.?) know a beekeeper?
