Title: Three years of keeping bees in the suburb. A reflection
Post by: Rodni73 on October 09, 2010, 09:30:04 PM
For two years I have three hives in my yards.  For most of the year the bees presence is not noticed at all in the immediate vicinities of the hives.  Just bees taking off vertically to tree top levels and going to where the flow is.  However this year I ran into three interesting problems.

One, in May both hives swarmed one swarm landed in my parents yard who live next door up in an oak tree. I could not reach it and in an effort to silence my dad.  No problems two 2lbs of honey silenced him.

Two, one swarm landed up high on a spruce tree in my neighbors yards on a hot day while his grand daughter was playing in the pool.  The bees were attracted to the water and moister even though there is a water source next to the hives.  I prayed that bees wont accidental sting the child but there was nothing I can do to reach the swarm to alleviate the problem.  Three days later they took off and two 2lbs of basswood and clover honey made an irate neighbore very happy! Add to that a BBQ platter and 6 bottles of India Pale ale made him happier!  Furthermore, I supplied him with tomatoes from our garden and gave him one striped bass after a fishing trip. He is a bee fanatic ever since.

Three and most problamatic, my neighbor up the street complained that he sees drowned bees in his royal pool.  A roast pork BBQ invitation on the 4Th of July shut him up.  Bees latterly disappeared and stoped visiting his pool.

So it is been quite an experience and I used honey and personal skills to keep people from calling the town. Although there are no ordinance against keeping bees but I'd rather make friends and keep people and bees happy rather than go to court and fight people in open forums.

I have a swarm of your bees in my backyard. My mowing crew is complaining so I'm going to have to do something to pacify them. Please send India Pale Ale and BBQ on down; enough for 12 people! I'll PM you with my address if that's OK with you! Don't need the honey.  :-D :-D

The darnest thing must have happened. Your bees stopped by my house first while enroute to Florida and really tore up the place. Please send enough to cover a family of four and if you don't care, make it next Saturday where I can have it while watching the South Carolina/Kentucky game.
