Title: Can I move a Hive 85 feet It is from a trap out in neighbors yard.
Post by: Tommyt on October 11, 2010, 04:56:29 PM
 I always hear 2 inch's or 2 miles
I did the trap out on the neighbors tree and seems it just about over
no Bees exiting the cone yesterday or today
I would like to remove the hive from the neighbors
to mine The distance is about 80 feet
The hive now sits West north west
When I get it too my yard I want it south to south east maybe due east
Can I just close the entrance up at night move it and open it in the morning
Do I have to move it a few miles away before returning it too my yard
I am in Tampa-Bay and the bees are busy with Brazilian Pepper
I checked this hive last week and it had a Half frame drawn and filled with honey
there maybe more, but I was working without smoker or suit (liquid smoke spray bottle)
bee keeping on a squeezed Budget, Squeaky to be exact  :)
I did have a Veil on but I got a little bit in a hurry when I was looking at them(I'm still green)
I will do a good inspection when I get them home and settled.

Thanks
Tom

What is the total time the hive has been set? If not 6 weeks or more, it is not finished.

You can move them in a week or two.  I would not worry about it as long as you seal up the old tree good.

You are not getting a reaction because all that are left are too young to fly, or haven't emerged. When it is time, go ahead and move them. There will be stragglers return to the tree for a couple days. By the third night, most or all should be oriented to the new location.

Thanks

I have another trap out for tomorrow MAYBE ?
I will do this one by the Book its about 45min's away
I would like to take the Brood from this Tree trap Hive
Do you think it is too new a Hive? to be removing anything ?
I don't want to take it from my 3 frame Nuc its already
been robbed and has not build comb back in the replacement
frame now in week 5
If I can't I just may give up on the trap-out because I would have to
Find someone to buy the brood from,
also will the brood chill
If I have it un-hived for 2 or 3 hrs

Is the new queen laying? If so, you can use the one frame with the least brood, as long as it has eggs.
If it's cool, keep the heat on in the car and the eggs will be fine. If in a truck, keep the frame in the cab with the heat on.
