Title: Should I bother treating the Varroa?
Post by: Hemlock on October 18, 2010, 10:17:30 AM
Did a mite count over 24 hours.  In one hive I counted 11 mites, Total!  In the other I counted 13, again Total!  If i left these untreated would it cause a problem?

Thanks

Is this a 24 hour drop from the hive on a sticky board?  or a sugar shake of a cup full of bee?  If it's a 24 hour drop it's not a problem.  If it's from a cupful of bees it's a lot of Varroa.

It's the 24 drop onto a sticky board under the hive.  No powdered sugar was used.  Sorry for not mentioning that.

Thanks

Counts sound good to me.  I did a couple of counts, even after two sugar shakes, and was getting counts btwn 120 and 150.  I am now treating w/Apiguard.  I'll do another count in a week to see if it did any good.

"You don't need treatment. People who have trouble with varroa ,moths,SHB,CCD and other stuff should buy some bees from me. Our bees stay strong and keep all that out of the hives. We are treatment free."

Sounds like a sales pitch and a crock of bull

I'd say they are doing fine. 40 to 50 would be acceptable this time of year.

So then we can NOT treat this fall for Varroa and likely be fine in Spring.  Great!  One less treatment is all the better.

Thanks All.
