Title: A Video For those With Winter Time Blues-December 16, 2010
Post by: JP on December 16, 2010, 04:03:02 PM
Made this for all you folks who are snowed in or your bees haven't flown in several weeks and won't be flying for perhaps months.

Its 75 degrees today, December 16, 2010.

Here's some footage:

Hope you get to feeling better.  I grew up outside of SA, TX and remember the seasons well, summer and not summer.  a little snow on the ground here but the high here today is 31 with a warming spell coming this weekend getting us up in the upper 30's  (where's that Global warming when you need it?).  First sunlight just poked through an hour or two ago after what seemed like a week.  a little glimpse of active bees is always nice, but boy-howdy you sure do know how to rub it in.   ;)

JP,

Thanks for the video!  It's been awhile since the girls could fly up here.  Nice to see such active bees.  Sorry to hear you're under the weather.  Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I know it might seem like I made this to rub it in but honestly I did not. Could have, but didn't.  ;)

Yeah, came down with something just in the last 24 hours or so, seems like a cold is trying to get at me, scratchy throat, runny nose and flat out tired.

Oh well, this doesn't happen too often to me, just have to ride it out.

Hope some of you enjoy the video watching the bees fly.

Just checked on them again and they're still cleaning up those supers.

Now that is rubbing it in.  :-D

Thanks, I needed that. I haven't seen a bee for a month, and it will probably be 3 more.

You're welcome Joel. I'll try and get more footage if the opportunity presents itself.

Here's to hoping yours come out of winter nice and strong.

Merry Christmas to you too, JP. Thanks for posting this. It was fun watching the girls buzzing around and partying on the porch.  :-D

Hope you get to feeling better.

I wanted to post a pic of the little circle on the porch, but I don't have enough posts...

Good video, I was wondering if all my hives are still kicking out there after this weeks freeze but have been too busy with work and trying to stay warm to check them.

That was really nice JP. I really didn't know you had such warm weather out your way in December. Here it is getting cold. Frosty in the morning. (well very cold for us)

Sorry you have a cold, feel better, eat some chicken soup.

Thanks JP, that really did hit the spot. All I get to see right now is dead bees in the snow around the hive. Didn't know how much I missed the little buggers.

So true, its why I come here.  Bee talk is better than nothing.  Winter is full of worry and wonder when its minus zero.  Thanks for the video.

JP and Schawee are detoxing from shake withdrawals...that explains the symptoms

Hey, it reached a balmy 47 degrees here-talk about a heat wave coming through...

Also enjoyed the video JP,

tough to just sit here and wonder if one's hives are even going to make it through the winter.

Our December has been having record cold spell and it went from a very warm november (temps in the 60s) to very cold (20s) in about 24 hours . . . so I do worry that the drastic temp change and the multiple days with below zero temps already is going to take its toll . . . so nice to just see some bees enjoying themselves - thanks!

Every now and then my instincts are correct.  :-D Glad you guys and gals liked the footage. Can't wait til spring to start shakin' swarms!

Gonna film every one that I can!

As a lot of you know I didn't get my camera until mid May. Lost out on two and a half months of filming!

And Bud3 couldn't get here fast enough.

I sure miss the big man!

Nice video JP. It's not even winter yet and I am sick of the cold weather.  Nice to see the girls so hard at work.
Any ideas on the pollen source for them this time of year?

Hope you feel better soon and Have a Happy Holiday!

I don't know where the white pollen is comming from?

So do all old bees in Florida need hand rails or just the snowbirds?

I believe April 23 is one of the days that was mentioned.

It's always on a weekend.

My wife and I will be leaving Thursday night for the trip to Macon, Ms.

Yep, it only took three years to get her to Bud's!  :-D

Nice video, as always, but you're just mean....LOL  It will be months before I get to see that from my girls.  Oh well, part of living in the north, I guess.

Scott, I just don't know about that, you and Peg have been together for a good long time I imagine and you're having a hard time of it yourself!

You're on your own with that one!  :-D

Len, what would be really mean is if I film them flying on Christmas day.  :-D

BTW, they were flying hard today, bringing in lots of pollen.

Our high on Christmas day is forecast to be 51 as of now.

This particular hive loves flying when its in the thirties no problem, so...

Merry Christmas to you as well JP !! Ann and I leave our supers out for the girls to clean out just like you did. Never had any problems with robbing like the books said we'd have.
Love your homemade equipment and watching the girls in a full circle eating their treat of honey you gave them. Just like a circle of kittens around a bowl of milk. :-D
