Hi, Can someone tell me ,when a queen goes out to mate, does she stay out for more then one day and do they come back to the hive each night if they stay out more then one day ? If they make a new queen before there are drones, will she keep going out until she is mated ? The reason I ask is,we are getting ready to move our bees to an other bee yard and don't want to leave her. If she comes back every night we can lock her in at night with the others.

Thanks A lot.
I'm curious about the second part; I'm anxious to do a small split to get a hive to a gardener nearby. I've been waiting to see the first drone to do it. I seem to remember that a virgin queen only has a certain amount of time to get mated or remain useless - definitely need more experienced verification of that though. (I probably should have already looked for drone comb and gone from there, but for no reason I was preferring to see actual drones.)
around here, i would not split a raise a queen myself until i see capped drone cells in my hives. don't know how others do it....
Well the thing is, I know enough not to split until I see drones but last week we went in one of our hives and we had a new queen and none of our hives have drones yet. SO ya know what ya gona do ?

A virgin queen returns to the hive every day from her mating flights.
A virgin queen will not go out on a mating flight unless it is 72 degrees or warmer.
If a virgin has not mated within about 3 weeks, she stops going on mating flights and will become a drone layer.
If she is gone over night it means that the drone was a great lay and brought out feelings in her that she has never experienced before :-D

...That or when he (literally) burst she ricocheted into a nearby tree and woke up at night dizzy and disoriented.
>Hi, Can someone tell me ,when a queen goes out to mate, does she stay out for more then one day and do they come back to the hive each night
Usually within an hour or two after leaving. They do not stay out overnight.
>If they make a new queen before there are drones, will she keep going out until she is mated ?
In my experience, and Francios Huber's observation, yes, she will eventually get mated but if it doesn't happen in three weeks she will lay nothing bot drones after she mates. I've seen crippled queens who couldn't fly and they never started laying, I assume because they could not get mated. Late mating leads to drone laying. Not mating leads to not laying.
> The reason I ask is,we are getting ready to move our bees to an other bee yard and don't want to leave her. If she comes back every night we can lock her in at night with the others.
The other issue, however is that she orients for a few days before she actually goes out to mate. If you move her far enough, she will probably reorient when she flies out and does not recognize any landmarks... but what if she doesn't?

Well ya know,I noticed all some people do is post trash and never answer or ask questions. Then beemaster just lets them keep on. So there ya go. That's why I don't even post here much anymore and don't even want to ask a question. I'm not interested in reading half trash every time I come to this forum.
To Scott's defense he is a very generous, seasoned bee keeper with plenty of knowledge. He was just trying to have a little fun, I'm certain he wasn't trying to offend you.

I see a forum as.....
1) A place to seek knowledge
2) A place to socialize.
3) A place to be entertained.
4) A place to debate and exchange ideas.
5) A place to build friendships
6) A place to help others.
Sorry....unless you go to a site that previews every post (Yuck!), you get a little of everything with a forum. If you restricted it down to only answering detailed questions, never varying off the path, and cut out items # 2 through 5...sorry, it just would not be a forum. Well, it would be a forum, just not one with half the chatter, or members.
Forums are like friends. Limit yourself to only perfect ones, and they will be few. Accept people for the wonderful things they are, overlook the quirks and faults, and you will surround yourself with many more people to benefit from.
This forum is the same. Take the good, and realize, that without the other stuff, you would have far less "good" stuff around.
And I think the "take your ball and go home types" that suggest they post fewer times, or suggest they will not visit as often, are far more damaging to the forum than the folks they oftentimes are complaining about. Better to part ways, then have a pee'r cryin all the time, when 99% are happy for the forum and are beyond thinking a forum will be perfect.
Trashing others in general terms about how nasty the forum is, or going after beemaster, is probably one of the last things some who leave actually do. So let me be the first to say....goodbye. You know, just in case I never hear from you again.
do an RSS feed and then you can preview stuff and not read it all if you don't want to. we all have choices......

Made me laugh. Thanks for making me smile!
When I remember Joelel's first 6 or so posts, I don't see where he has any sort of complaint coming for what anybody posts.
Besides, Hardwood made sure the question was answered before he joked about it.
Review his posts and you will find a wealth of great info.
RULE 1) KEEP CONTENT FAMILY FRIENDLY
This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY FORUM – if you have no idea what that means; I'll explain. You are expected to keep your language and content so that the youngest member of a family can read your posts WITHOUT the need of supervision by a parent or elder. This does not mean that parents should allow their kids to run free here or on any website on the Internet, but it is YOUR responsibility to be FRIENDLY to members of all ages, both in the wording and the meaning of your posts.
Great for the youngest,If she is gone over night it means that the drone was a great lay and brought out feelings in her that she has never experienced before
Trashy mouth people talk trash where ever they go.
I know some of you just wait for me to post so you can get something started. I go along with ya because I love getting you all going, goda love it.You go for it every time, goda love it.
if your goal is to argue with someone, come down to the coffee house. pick any subject and we all can have a debate. if your goal is to learn about beekeeping or to have questions answered, i'd suggest you adjust your own attitude. you have already caused most people here not to want to interact with you because you seem more interested in challenging information than in learning.
everyone here tries to help people and answer questions to the best of our ability. yes, sometimes we have some fun with the answers. if you are offended, i, personally, will see if there is a Beekeeping for Children site and post it for you. again i will suggest that you use the RSS feed and preview messages before you read them. that way you can avoid those that might not be to your taste.
Bad Mouthing the forum gains no points either.

It's so funny whenever I have read anything written by Joelel, I always saw the evil angry bitter side of him. He come's here complaining about the forum and "Beemaster" for a very long time. I think indeed that Bjorn said goodbye to you Joelel.
Don't sit here and trash the play ground you play in and then say you hardly come here because you don't like it - I'll gladly make that decision for you.
You are rude but I agree that I didn't take too kindly for Hardwood's promiscuous queen, but I was waiting for someone to say something like that in the forum so I could complain - YOU DID. It's your style, you are that scorpion being carried by the frog across the pond, you have you use your stinger, it's in your nature.
I have had to many complaints from members, they'll all basically said the same thing, you are a rude and arrogant man. Those are not my words, but I can't help but agree.
Goodbye Joelel, I'll do you the favor of NOT having to post here "often". I do aim to please. Let someone else take you in and put up with you. Honestly, this is the best favor I have done the forum since creating the Coffee House.
Beemaster
old saying IF YOU CANT STAND THE HEAT GET OUTTA THE KITCHEN thank you beemaster :-D
I sincerely apologize to any I may have offended.

wasn't a big issue Scott - between those reading, I get letters from members asking the Humor is a Funny Thing Room - I might let the wording not even catch my eye in there though Ihat still scalded a little - it's my job to shake fingers. It wasn't really necessary in the defense of the Late Joelel, nor me.
His trouble was he was like a wound that finally scabs over, and you just have to pick at it again. Buying it another week around, I have enough unnecessary requests for many many months to ban him. He has bugged a lot of members, not just me.
No harm done, Peggy can smack me in the face at Bud's if she feels the need, but I had to say poor choice of where you posted that. Giving an idiot fodder just makes for battle. Luckily (and I get no joy out of saying that we can always use one less "crap stirrer" or argumentative member in the forums) but again luckily, it gets old, people that just nip at you like pant leg full of little spiders walking on you - that is kinda how one member described him.
And farnkly this is where it is funny as an admin to sitback and get info from members who find "Joelel" like people out there bad mouthing me. Well, if I deserve it, then I don't think I represent the feedback members give me.
Enough, this topic is over, great reply Scott - ty.
