I have a friend who lost a hive this winter and he was asking me what I thought happened. I have included a picture of one of the frames, a small cluster of bees are at the top of this frame and the frame was in the center of the bottom super. I told him to me it looks like they starved but I told him I would post it on this forum and ask other bee keepers what they thought happened. also the brood looked liked they just dried up and turned white, just a quick note... he harvested honey from the hive in November of 2010 which seems to me might have been a little late in the season to do. That only left the bees with one deep and one medium, any thoughts from fellow bee keepers would be appreciated. We live in northeastern NC.

How much honey was in the hive. Looks like in the pic there was honey on the frame. Bees can freeze on a frame with honey or close to honey if there are not enough number of bees to heat themselves and keep them from freezing. Low numbers can be the result of a whole bunch of reasons. Bad queen, no queen, mites, disease, taxes, you name it.
that hive went queenless-im suprised it did not go drone-RDY-B

When we checked what was left of the hive today there was maybe 5 medium frames that had honey in them, but what was left of the bees were on the deep frames... we did find bees in the cells head first but they were dead. There was also maybe 4 or 5 queen cells made.
What was the history of the queen? Looks like plenty of stores, but a dwindled cluster.

Same thing happened as the last time with a new member with one or two posts and pictures from image shack was used. I clicked on the image to get a better shot and every warning in my system went wild.
I now have all kinds of security warnings going off and I can't keep up with the pop-ups. I tried everything. So now my 911 geek was called.
Just a heads up to others.
same thing here. i won't even look at image shack pics and i won't use the program. i have no idea what it's doing but it sets off windows 7 like crazy.
I think it may be a windows seven thing. i posted the image for this .It went through a couple virus scans in my email and when I downloaded it from the mail server. imageshack may be playing havoc with your spam blockers I suspect. the photo is probably clean.
Hi security levels make typical ad sponsored places like image shack set off warnings.
i use firefox with adbloc plus so the ads don't even make it past the browser interface.All I see is a slot where it says advertisement mosst times if I see anything at all.
it's a windows defender thing in 7. blocking 3rd party cookies helps.
I sent a note to imageshack. lets see if they respond.
Just for informational purposes, I run Linux and I never have any problems with viruses, popups, or anything else. :-D I looked at the image shack photos with no problem.
frame, I'm running linux as an amateur and still getting popups (definitely fodder for a new topic in the comp forum)
anyway - I thought I saw open brood in the pic, "C" shaped larvae in a large ring around the center of the frame. - need more seasoned opinions on this too, but I'm not sure the small cluster can manage all the larvae - are they bundled up around more brood and a queen cell?
disabling 3rd party cookies helped a lot. i'm looking at that bit of brood on the 2nd pic and thinking chalkbrood. any mummies on the bottom board or around the hive? they tend to clean those out pretty well until they run out of workers to do it.
not the greatest angle into the cells so i won't hazard a guess on that one.
I got a Email from a web master tonight about
Image Shack carrying a bad virus and they had to revamp their
page and was sending out a note to say no-one could use it on the page.They would put their own host up but it would run very limited pictures
