Title: cypress lumber
Post by: Ted n Ms on March 08, 2011, 08:57:02 PM
Yesterday i bought six cypress logs for sixty dollars a ton. $216 dollars and had it band sawed for 160.00 per thousand. It sawed out 1200 bd. ft.= 190.00 total of 416.00 dollars. I had it sawed in ten and seven inch boards. Thats roughly 34.5 per board ft. A 1x10 x12 is about 3.45 or 1.73 per hive body. I know i'll have some waste but it's still pretty good. :-P

Dang, that's pretty cool.  Now, you said you had it cut in 10 and 7 inch boards.  Are they true 10 inch boards width or the same measurements of 9.75" they sell at HD and Lowe's?  I bought a few of those 10" ones from HD only to realize later that I could only make supers out of them.  Lesson learned for me.

wouldn't it be nice if you could buy frames to fit boxes made from standard lumber.

That's great. The cypress will probably last forever!

How does that weigh compared to pine?

Good deal!  My plan is to switch over to cypress as I expand and then rotate out my pine boxes as the wear out.

My other boxes are made from eastern red cedar.

How does that weigh compared to pine?

It's about the same as white pine and lighter than yellow pine.
