I am very interested in keeping bees! I am in East Texas, and am in the researching stage of beekeeping. I am thinking of starting out this Spring, but want to make sure the evenings/days are warm enough, with our recent cold spells. Also, I am worried that I have waited too late to order bees for this year. Any advice?
I am reading, 'Beekeeping for Dummies," at the moment, as I saw several recommendations on other sites for this book. I will be checking other reading lists, and browsing the web for more information.
I am currently looking for a mentor, who would let me try this hobby out, just to make sure I won't get in a box of bees that will terrify me. :) Also, any information on groups in my area or Tyler would be appreciated!
I keep a garden, and know I have some bees in the area, as they are on the clover in my lawn. I have only seen 3 or 4 though. Yesterday, a very confused bee wandered into my garage, and checked out my red stadium seat. Thankfully, it decided to move on to my flowers!

I really liked "The Complete Idiots Guide to Beekeeping". It's an excellent book for the beginner and shows you how to raise bees without costly chemicals.

Yes, I found that out about a month ago. How cool is that that we can conversate with the author of a book that, IMO, is one of the best books written about beekeeping.
I worked in a country club in Tyler once, nice area, I liked living there. I can't give you any info about groups in the Tyler area, but it seems as if its time to stick you toe in the water and give it a try. Its nice to have a mentor, it seems as if there is a thousand questions and its good to have someone to bounce questions off. If you don't have a mentor this forum is a great asset, there is always some willing to help or answer a question about something you don't understand.
