Title: NSB trap out part 1
Post by: hardwood on March 10, 2011, 05:25:42 PM
Thought ya'll might like to watch a trap out. I hope I can show it to you in segments and that my efforts might help a little.

Thanks Iddee for all of your great information!

I love it. When I posted about trapouts, I was hoping some would take the basics and build on them. Thanks. You have given me a few ideas for improvements just in the first segment. I'll be watching for the follow ups. I would also like to know how the direct queen release works.
Do they accept her? Did you have drawn comb, honey, or pollen in the catch box? Will she swarm out once she gets a lb or two of followers. Many questions you are going to find answers to.

PS. A little typing would help a lot. I don't have sound on my computer, so I only get what I can see.

Sorry Iddee...I'll try to catch you up a little.

This is one of two oaks in the same yard with bees. The second turned out to be a tiny little colony that I was able to just reach in and remove before sealing it up.

The trap out started two days before I introduced the queen. It was a virgin queen that I was able to pull from a swarm cell from a hive of a woman that I mentor...does that make her my mentee? My mentos??

Anyway, I thought I'd give the virgin a try as an experiment. Who knows what will happen? The flow is pretty strong in that area so I haven't started to feed them but that may change. The trap has some drawn comb and a drop or two of LGO. I'm hoping that after two days there is enough of a population in the trap to support the virgin and that she gets back from mating ok.

Great video.   Did any of the frames in the new box have foundation or drawn comb?   I would like to see a few pics of the bees and frames in a couple of weeks to see how the new hive has grown.
