Title: Left over winter honey?
Post by: Titus on April 07, 2011, 01:52:35 PM
I did an inspection yesterday and several hives had full supers (I use all mediums) of capped honey from last year I guess.  Should I do anything with this honey like freeze and save it in the frames, or just leave it on the hives?  Come to think of it, the honey could be mixed with sugar syrup since I fed them last fall.  I guess that rules out extracting and bottling   :(

If it's not usable as human food, leave it in the hive.  Sounds like you will get to bottle the entire June honey flow  , since you already have stores for the bees going into fall.  I'd leave those old honey frames close to the brood nest so they will be the first consumed by the bees.

I've been placing one frame at a time of left over honey from one of my dead outs to my (only survivor) super colony.  Its obviously got a mix of syrup w/ it too.  P-willows have just started and Maples are trying.  We made it to 57F today w/ 60's predicted over next few days.

Spring has finally sprung in N/W Wisconsin :)

Yeah i have to agree that using the honey for humans would be a bad idea. Will be a great treat for the bees next year.
