Title: New NUC
Post by: Benadryl on April 11, 2011, 10:32:41 PM
Can someone tell me the best way to setup a new NUC? I am getting a new 5 frame NUC tomorrow afternoon. I would like to transfer the 5 frames into a regular 10 frame hive body. Should I set up the NUC in the location of where I want the hive and wait a few days before I transfer the frames or should I do it as soon as I get them?

Put the 5 frames of the nuc with 2 new frames on the outside of the 5 frames inside of the 10 frame hive to make it 7  frames.   This keeps the beetles from having too much space to hide.  Check them very closely to keep the bees from expanding into the open space of the 10 frame hive.   As the bees grow, you can place frames on the outside of the frames each time.  But for me, I would just throw them in there with all the frames and keep an eye out for the beetles.   Put the nuc into the big hive when you get them home and where you want them to stay if you want.
