Title: What to do when you get stung by a bee?
Post by: Mshel on April 24, 2011, 04:47:55 PM
What is the best remedy for a bee sting? How do you know if you are allergic to a bee sting? :'(

When I get stung by a bee first thing I want is to pull the stinger out, and if the smoker is lit puff a good blast of smoke on it to disguise the alarm pheromone (banana smell).

Stings do not bother me like they use to and I find the more excited I get the worse it seems to swell up.

Benadryl works pretty good on controlling the itch and swelling, I rub some of the gel on if it gets too itchy.

If you are allergic you will have breathing problems from your throat swelling, an epi pen would be real handy at that point in time, could save your life.

Other remedies could be just about anything from tobacco, a cut potato, cold pack, any number of over the counter sting meds, some different plants, etc.

Laughter is the best medicine.

I always tell visitors to Bjorn Apiaries..."If you see me get stung, go ahead and laugh. Cause when I see you get stung....I'm going to laugh at you!"   :-D

I cuss a little and have been know to run or scream like a girl. I usually get stung either getting in or out of the truck before I put on my jacket or just after I take it off.

Slapping the bee off is a natural reaction.   Then I just grin and bear it.   Later on I like to scratch the area.   Just feels good.

I usually wait until I finish working them, then look to see how many of the stingers I can find. If I don't find them for a day or two, they sometimes get infected. Most times I don't feel more than about 2 out of five, or so.

After you remove the stinger, tape a penny on it, it works.

No no you have it all wrong. You superglue a sacajawea dollar coin over it and that prevents you from itching it.  :-D

Actually this subject comes up every year and has been written about at length.  After removing stinger and smoking area, applying HEAT to area of sting can be quite effective in reducing pain and swelling.  I use my wifes hair dryer.

I am surprised that no one said to put tobacco on it.   Old one.   My old man used to do it for us boys when we were young and he still chewed tobacco.
