When you paint a hive, do you paint inside and out or just the outside?

Ya, just the outside, and maybe the top and bottom of the boxes.

I put one coat of primer and two coats of color, is this enough or should I add another coat of color? What are other peoples experience with the top coats lasting on the hives?

I use a good exterior flat latex and put "3" coats on the first time. I don't think a primer is necessary.
Depending on weather and other conditions I will one coat again in 3 to 5 years.
Some time you can pick up a gallon of good paint that someone had mixed and wasn't pleased With the color, the store cuts the price up to as much as 50%. Bee hives don't have to be white. Most of mine are "Bull Frog" green, Others are light gray.:)don2

local walmart mistint "dark cream" $3.00. I keep painting untill I think all the wood pores are filled. My SBB are like five or six coats and my bodies are like three or four.
