Title: so i'm thinking about spreading talstar around my hives
Post by: Keith13 on May 02, 2011, 10:02:33 PM
I went to check my hives today and it looks like I lost two hives to fire ants one was a new swarm the other was a full three medium colony. Both hives were full of fire ant eggs and ants this in under a week. Next I had empty hive bodies on my stands but staggered they were full of ants as well. I think I will spread either top choice if its still on the market (I have a left over 5 gal bucket full at my dad's) or talstar around my hives for 50 feet. Thoughts opinions?

Disgusted,

Keith

As an insecticide, Talstar is lethal, but it does the job too well, killing bees and birds that come in continuous contact with the chemical. Airborne, it is inhaled by humans and animals, causing damage to the body.

Just thinking out loud here but could you just use cans filled with liquid to set the hive stand legs in?

Keith, I use it around my hives with no problems. Works great!

I also here it works great for stink bugs.  Just mix it up and spray on house and around windows and doors. Kill...Kill...since they are nector thiefs too

my hive stands are hurricane proof they are set in concrete so I cant do the oil/ can thing. I think I will try both options presented by JP and Michael

Keith, I assume you are thinking of using Talstar PL correct? That's the granulated one I use. It is a synthetic pyrethroid but its a slow release product. Have never had any issues where it affected any hives.

I would never use a liquid pyrethroid around bees as it is extremely deadly in application.

One 25 LB bag of PL does an acre. Works up to three months or longer for fire ants.
