Title: Oil in SHB traps?
Post by: Hemlock on May 08, 2011, 12:05:06 AM
I just started using beetle traps.  I used Mineral oil and the bees went crazy for it.  Should i be using Vegetable oil instead or is this normal?  This is a second after i put the oil in!

I was told to put apple cider vinger in them as well to help attract the beetles. Anyone else do this?? My bees typically do not mess with the trap, they just like to propolis them!

They will get used to the trap being there. Either oil is fine--- vegetable oil will go rancid over time. I use mineral oil.

You usually put cider in traps that have more than one reservoir. Cider in one oil in two etc. That looks like an AJ's trap--- I use just oil.
